Last NASA Mid Atlantic race of the season
NASA racers descend upon Summit Point raceway for the last time in 2008 early in November. In order to have an end of the year awards party saturday night, the race schedule was changed and 2 sprints were run on the first day of the weekend. This amended schedule provided no practice and thunder was first on track for qualifying at 0800. Many of the CMC drivers followed Lydic's lead and parked on grid the night before. Renntag Racing driver, Colin Jevens wanted to wait to see if it was going to be a wet session and kept his car in his paddock area. Dry tires would prove to be the best choice and Colin lined up at the back of the grid to try to find some space at the tail end.
Colin's strategy seemed to have worked as he was able to garner yet another pole position in class. This is often key to getting out in front early.
The first race was to start late morning with a standing start. Finally, a standing start. When it came time for the green flag the field got away clean and Colin was able to get out in front behind the two lead CMC2 cars. There were battles behind as the rest of the CMC and CMC2 group fought for position. With just 3 laps to go, Jevens, Bill Joyce, and Kent Lydic came together in T1. None would continue. Matt managed to take the checkered flag for Renntag Racing as Dawes watched from the paddock.
Race 2 had a slightly smaller field. Both Matt and Jon were ready for battle. Again, another standing start, Hallelujah! All cars took the green safely and the race was on. There were several position changes and our own Matt and Jon battled it out if not for anything other than bragging rights. They both finished the race safely and were eager to run the one hour sprint on sunday.
The Saturday night party had a few surprises as there were special awards given out for achievement. Each recipient was shocked to hear their name called as was Colin when he was given the "Spirit" award for promoting and supporting the Mid-Atlantic region. He also later recieved awards for Time Trials and taking 3rd in the CMC championship, losing by one point to Kent Lydic.
The sunday one hour sprint was just for fun. Jon and Matt got to battle it out. Matt ran strong until he started smoking badly. We later learned that a head gasket repair was in order. Ron Cates invited Colin to drive the #12 Finish Line Productions sponsored Mustang.
With the 2008 season wrapped up, we have an awards party on December 6th for CMC/CMC2, and then its time to prepare for the season opener in late February at VIR.
